What I've Learned
When in the morning hug your child and hold them extra tight
Listen to them extra long
Look at them with deep passion
They are the most important people you'll know
Memorable Moments
September 14th
My first 20 mile run, Josh , Alicia ,Adam, Don and Lori were all
on hand. Don and Lori both ran 10. Josh even ran 5 miles with
us.
August 3rd
The Rose family, Don, Lori, and Adam, decide to join Josh and
I for a run, bike ride, and rollerblading at Kensington MetroPark’s
8-mile track. Adam has difficulty making it up hills and there
are many of them. Josh on his rollerblades helped push Adam up
the hills.
July 27th
Our first training session was an 8-mile run with Adam and his
parents. Josh and Alicia came along with their bikes. Ed was Adam’s
little engine when he couldn’t make it up the hills. I was
just trying to get up the hills while maintaining my 10-mph pace.
July 19th
Montana- Running the back roads with Alicia, my 13 year old daughter,
driving the rental car next to me.
July 11th
My first 10-mile run with Ed around Walled Lake.
COOKING AND RECIPES
There is no question that the statement about the importantance
of a good diet is critical to a sport like racing in several categories
from swimming, biking to running. .My journey down the road of
Ironman is teaching me a great deal about my metabolism.
So its only natural I apply what I am learning
to my cooking and eating habits.
This statement I came up with years ago….and
it really has meaning now…
They Say We are What We Eat….Then What WE
Cook We Shall Become……
When I started my journey in training I was 172
lbs….that’s about a good six more than I should but
most importantly it was the ratio of fat to lean body mass that
I needed to be concerned with. When I was on Survivor for 41 days
I went from 170 to 143…very little if any body fat left
and a reduction of muscle.
Long distance racers rely on well balanced intake
of carbohydrates and liquids almost like fueling a race car for
a long race. You take fuel in and you burn it. Once your metabolism
understands the program during daily and weekly training periods
of a great deal of cardio work it burns the calories constantly
even while your not training….pretty cool actually. It almost
allows you to eat anything you want, but why would you. Your spending
all this quality time to re-shape re-train the body machine why
not feed it great stuff to build on….So here are some recipes
I came up with along the road to Ironman so far. Hope you enjoy
them……Keith

The Final journey To Ironman Begins
September 6th and 7th…Ed has decided with
my complicated up coming schedule its time to get the two biggest
out of the way so a tapering and healing process can start..Saturady
the 6th would be our 20 mile run and Sunday the 7th would be our
100 mile bike ride. Both days I had private caterings to do on
those evenings afterwards. On the 6th we only ran 18 and on Sunday
I pulled out at 60 ran out of time and energy…needless to
say I got one of Ed’s famous e-mails…I’m very
concerned… so the weekend of September 13th and 14th rolls
around. We were scheduled to race in a short triathlon paid the
fee even convinced my brother Jay to join us (he’s a natural
athlete and at 135 lbs has jumped into the world of training pretty
easily.) On race day Adam, Don and Lori were all going to be on
hand and afterwards we were going to go back to there house with
all of the kids. Two days before Ed make the argument that it’s
a waste of our time and I needed to get the time in for the long
distance. So Don and Ed discussed it and Don agreed which left
me out numbered so on that Saturday we did a 20 mile run with
a group of 250 from the Running Fit store, most of them were their
traing for the Detroit Free Press Marathon. Took 4 hours all the
kids had fun Josh my son even ran with me for 5 miles a major
feat for him. By the end of the day Don’s truck was fully
painted which took place while he ran with us for 10 miles. It
turned out to be the right decision. So come Sunday at 6:00 am
Ed and I set out on our 100 mile bike trek that’s 10 times
around the outside road loop of Kensington. . After 6 hours I
was burnt out but got a second wind by the 7th hour. We finished
in 8 hours, and of course the whole team was there. Josh Alicia,
Adam, Don and Lori and of course ED….So its September 17th
took two days off and agreed to meet Ed in the morning at 6:00
am to run five. I could only do three my knees hurt so badly,
I guess they need more time to rest. But I swam that night 80
laps and last night 130…I’ll bike 50 today and swim
again tonight……the reality for me now is any hard
work I didn’t get done I need to do now fast..I have only
22 days before I leave for Hawaii…. and I am fully aware
of how hard this is going to be……
